I was in a bit of a funk for the past few weeks but have finally broken it. I was staying up way too late and not getting what I wanted to accomplish done, and then feeling guilty and overly tired. The other thing was that I was eating dinner around six, and not going to bed until 2 let me rationalize that a tasty snack around 10 was fine.
In an attempt to try to be healthy the snacks started off as sliced veggies. But not being a rabbit I decided that some dip (ie sour cream mixed with either ranch packaged dip or onion soup mix) was a balanced mix as long as I didn’t do crazy on the dipping. Right, well, veggies are kind of bland and boring. Bring on the Pita Chips. They are called Pita Bites and are available in Garlic and Chive at the Costco in Seoul.
Let’s talk about the dip for second. I can only buy sour cream at Costco, as I’ve never seen it sold anywhere else, and the containers are big. 970 grams big. And yes, I am married but my husband’s been working 7 days a week for a few weeks now and so hasn’t been eating at home. IE that’s a lot of sour cream for one person to finish.
By the time I get to purchasing and subsequently finishing my second container (with a veggie and pita chip mix) I start to feel a tad guilty. I can’t finish the sour cream in time and am throwing it out. Then I remembered that I have a recipe for sour cream chocolate chip cake. Great! Problem solved. I’ll just whip up a batch of that and then I’m not wasting food nor money.
I pulled out my organic flour and follow the recipe to the T. BUT, I forgot that since the flour isn’t what I’m used to (read as Alberta wheat which has a very different outcome than flour of other nations — yes, I come from a food snob province, first the beef now the flour) all the chocolate chips sink to the bottom of the pan so that it’s cake on top of a layer of chocolate chips.
The cake tasted fine. The chip incident was unfortunate but if you sliced it and ate it on it’s side you almost got the same effect. BUT those damn pita chips were calling me. I don’t like to snack on sweet things and normally don’t buy them as I can’t stop eating them hence the beginning of the veggie snack plates and the cake didn’t get eaten and it too hit the bin.
On the third trip to Costco (btw by this time the sour cream situation has now been running for about 2 months) I think “That’s it. No more sour cream. You’re not eating it. It can’t be that healthy for you. Which means no more pita chips. STOP. WALK AWAY FROM THE COOLER. BUT WAIT!! What is that delightful little treat I see in the expensive cheese aisle? OMG I don’t know what it is or how to pronounce it but I really think I need that.”
Hubby happened to be with me on this trip (he’s not very good at going grocery shopping as he hates the crowds and tends to get grumpy and needs to be left in aisles with a snack and reading material so as not to drive me insane. If it’s a “list day” he’ll come because I promise to only buy what’s on the list and not ohhh and ahhh and brainstorm about what delightful treats/meals I can make with various new items that I find in Costco).
I digress.
Hubby looks at my grinning face and asks “Is that on the list?” Bugger. ”No but OMG am I ever excited about it. Let’s find you a new aisle to wait in.” Which of course meant that I *had to buy* more pita chips.
Onto the actual item itself. It’s this wonderfully delightful whipped cheese stuff. 3 containers, 2 kinds (Garlic and Herb, and Spinach and Artichoke) AND it came with 7 recipes on the back of the packaging. AND it was on sale. AND not in that “I’ll need to eat this in 2 days” kind of sale.
In my defense, it came in a package of 3. It seemed healthier than sour cream (of course I didn’t compare the nutrition information, don’t be silly). It tasted delightful. It was gone in about 2 1/2 weeks….
Moral of the story: Go to bed earlier…. perhaps I need to make a Costco run.

I’ve seen that 3 pack cheese stuff before and couldn’t justify. It was on sale? I need to go to costco….
sorry haven’t been in touch. been working on grace’s routine so that hopefully she’ll actually go to sleep when she’s supposed to, rather than like the night you were over….haha~

Oh, now I see you really do understand my late night/early mornings conundrum. I’m a mess from staying up waaayyy too late.
As for the sour cream and whipped cheese “stuff” those are things that I couldn’t care less about here, but will suddenly become my favorite foods in Korea. Heh.
